
The city of Chkalovsk (former settlement Vasileva Sloboda) is the birthplace of a legendary pilot Valery Chkalov who made the first in the world direct flight Moscow-North Pole- Vancouver (USA) and who invented unique ways of aerobatics. The settlement of Vasilevo founded in the 12th century was renamed in honor of the legendary pilot. His memory is carefully kept in a memorial house-museum, as well as in a hanger where planes are kept which were flown and tested by Chkalov including famous ANT-25. The following names are also connected with the history of the town: P. Alexeyev the tester of ships with under-water wings, and A.Kamanin - a famous painter. Chkalovsk is the birthplace of a famous folk handicraft - (Gorkovsky (Nizhegorodsky) velvet.
There is an under built mooring wall in the city. In order to provide safety for tourists it is necessary to carry out complex of repairing works of the wall as well as works of engineer and transport infrastructure of the attached territory. The cost of expenses is USD 1, 5 million. Close to mooring territory on the area of 1,9hectare (shore zone of the Gorky Sea, mooring territory and town beach) it is planned to build a cultural-entertainment and sport complex "Vasileva Sloboda" which will include a souvenir and art shop, a cafe (restaurant), a health spa and a beach complex.
Total amount of investments is USD 1, 5 million.
