
It is situated in the southern-eastern part of Nizhegorodsky region 121km away from N.Novgorod. It borders on Gaginsky, Shatckovsky, Perevozsky, Murashkinsky, Sergarchsky, and Knyagininsky regions. The administrative centre is the working-class settlement Buturlino, situated in the Central part of the region. Buturlino was first mentioned in the historical documents of the 16th century. Its name is connected with the name F.Buturlin, who got those lands from the tsar after Kazan campaign. The peasants of the region took part in Stepan Rasin and E.Pugachev’s rebellions. At the end of the 19th –the beginning of the 20th century the village of Buturlino was famous for highly- developed trade. Merchants from various regions arrived at the fairs. In June 1929 Buturlinsky region was founded.
