A powerful fortress was erected to protect the monastery and the fair.
The centre of the monastery ensemble is Trinity Cathedral (1658) where frescoes of the 16th century still remain.

The refectory of Mackarjev monastery (1651) is a two-storey building. The first floor was used for household needs and when the fair was at work it was used as a warehouse. Uspenskaya church joined the big hall of the refectory and on the opposite western side it was connected with the bell-tower by the then opened church porch. In the four corners of the monastery there were round towers and between them – square ones with gates. In the southern part facing the river there was a main entrance – Saint Gates with Michail Arkhangel church over them. Originally the church had only one top, but in 1670 it was substituted by more complicated completion of five tops.
The walls of the monastery have embrasures for lower fight and gun-slots for shooting at battles.
In their thickness the arched bays were made, and the battles passage was covered with a wooden roof. The walls with merlons are 8 m high and 2,5 wide.
