Nizhny Novgorod has rail connections with Moscow (more than 10 trains daily from Kursk and Kazan railway stations, the journey takes from 4,5 hours to 7 hours), Astrakhan, Volgograd, Izhevsk, Kazan, Kirov, Orenburg, St.Petersburg, Tyumen, Chelyabinsk, Yaroslavl. During summer time there is a rail connection also with Adler, Brest, Vorkuta, Lena, Novorossisk, Noyabrsk, Odessa and Simferopol.
Attention: as far as railway is concerned Nizhny Novgord is still called Gorky, so you should look for Gorky in the timetable.
There is another important railway station in Nizhny Novgorod region - Arzamas. Those trains on meridian routes (from the north to the south and back) stop at Arzamas-1 railway station. Those trains on latitudinal routes (from the west to the east and back) go through Arzamas-2 railway station: from Moscow (nearly 10 trains, daily), Barnaul, Ekaterinburg, Yoshkar Ola, Izhevsk, Kazan, Kurgan, Korotchayevo, Krasnoyarsk, Leninogorsk, Novokuznetsk, Omsk, Tomsk, Tyumen, Tynda and Cheboksary.

Railway station of Nizhny Novgorod

It is situated in Kanavinsky district of the city, on the left bank of Oka river. You can take a tram No 1 from the station to the Kremlin, or bus No 3, 38, 45c, 47, 52, 61, 74, 90e; mini-bus No T2, T8, T20, T31, T33, T34, T40, T41, T45, T47, T58, T70, T81, T82, T90, T171, or on foot (it will take an hour).
Moscow is connected with Nizhny Novgorod by a federal road M-7 Moscow-Vladimir-Nizhny Novgorod with a length of 389, 7 km. Traffic is pretty hectic.
Inter-regional bus routes connect Nizhny Novgorod with 15 subjects of the Russian Federation. Buses from Moscow, Yoshkar-Ola, Naberezhniy Chelny, Novocheboksarsk, Orenburg, Saransk, Temnikovo, Ulyanovsk, Ufa, Cheboksary arrive to Nizhny Novgorod bus station. Buses arrive to Kanavinskaya bus station from Moscow (departure from Kursk railway station and from Shelkovskaya underground station, the journey takes 6 hours), also from Vladimir, Ivanovo, Kineshma, Kostroma, Murom, Pestakovo, Puchezh, Ryazan, Sharia, Yurevits.
There are direct bus routes to the neighboring districts from some of the district centres of Nizhegorodsky region: Shakhunya- Yaransk, Sharanga- Ioshkar-Ola, Uren Sharia - Velikiy Ustyug, Cokolskoye - Ivanovo, Dzerzhinsk - Moscow, Dzerzhinsk Murom, Pavlovo - Moscow, Lukoyanov - Saransk, Sergach - Shumerlya, Sergach -Saransk, Pervomaisk - Saransk, Pervomaisk - Temnikov.

Nizhny Novgorod river station receives ships cruising on the route Moscow-Astrakhan, Moscow-Rostov-on-Don and Astrakhan - Nizhny Noovgorod and others. These are comfortable three and four deck ships designed for slow cruises along Volga with lengthy stops in all large cities. Ships cruise usually in summer, some in May and September. From Moscow they depart from Northern river station. Tickets should be purchased in tourist agencies of the city of departure.
