The main railway stations of Nizhny Novgorod region are Moskovsky railway station in Nizhny Novgorod and two railway stations in Arzamas. You can reach Arzamas by bus which will take 2 hours from Nizhny Novgorod, also by taking a local train or long-hauled train on the route to Adler, Astrakhan, Kazan, Novorossiisk and Samara.
It is more convenient to use local trains when traveling across the region. They go from 6a.m. till midnights on a majority of routes every 20-40 minutes during rush hours and every 2-3 hours afterwards.
On a Vyaznikovsky (western) route trains go from Moskovsky railway station to Dzerzhinsk, Seima (Volodarsk), Gorokhovets and Vyazniki. You can change at Iliono station and take a local train towards Frolishi. You can also take this route departing from Avtozavodsky district (Kustovaya station) located near metro station "Komsomolskaya"; local trains depart from there towards Doskino station where you can change trains conveniently.
On Zavolzhsky (north-western) route trains depart from Moscovsky railway station and Varya station located In Moscovsky district Kominterna str, towards Balakhna and Zavolzhye (6-8 trains daily).
On Vetluzhsky (north-eastern) route trains only depart from Moskovsky railway station to Kiselikha, Tarasikha, Semenov, Kerzhenets, Vetluzhskaya, Uren and Shakhunya (3 trains daily). You can change trains at Sukhobezvodnoye station and take a train to Lapshanga, in Shakhunya - to Ezhikha, Kotelnich, and Kirov. Train connection with Vakhtan and Syava has ceased.
From Moscovsky railway station as well as from Kustovaya station (near metro Komsomolskaya) and Miza (Gagarin’s prospect) trains depart to Zeletsino (Kstovo), Metallist (Pavlovo) and on Arzamas route to Shonikha, Zimenki, Surovatikha, Sechug, Serezha, Soloveika and Arzamas.
In Arzamas to continue your route you can change trains to various destinations i.e. Venets, Murom, Uzhovka and Sergach.

Nizhegorodsky region is characterized for the development of its auto roads. Due to this fact Nizhny Novgorod has direct bus connection with the majority of large regional centers. The north of the region is an exception, which is easier to reach by train.
Inter-city routes

Here inter-city buses depart to southern and eastern parts of the region. On Lyskovsky route they depart to: Lyskovo, Vorotinets and Spasskoye. On Sergachsky route- to Bolshoe Murashkino, Perevoz, Bolshie Bakaldy, Buturlino, Bornukovo, Gagino, Bolshoe Boldino, Unkino, Knyaginino, Sergach, Sechenovo, Salgany, Pilna and Kurmysh. On Arzamas route - to Dalnee Konstantinovo, Perevoz, Vad, Annenkovsky Karier, Arzamas, Ardatov, Mukhtolovo, Gremyachevo, Shatki, Ponetayevka, Bolshaya Arat, Lukoyanov, Razino, Gagino, Bolshoe Maresievo, Ivkovo, Bolshoe Boldino, Pochinki, Naruksovo. On Pavlovsky route – to Gorbatov, Pavlovo, Sosnovskoye, Mukhtolovo, Vacha, Navashino, Viksa and Kulebaki.

Also you can use inter-city bus routes across the region which connect regional centers outside Nizhny Novgorod: from Dzerzhinsk to Gorodets, Kovernino, Chkalovsk, Sokolskoye, Vacha, Ardatov and Gorbatov; from Arzamas to Knyaginino, Pochinki, Pervomaisk, Voznesenskoye, Diveevo, Kulebaki, Viksa and Mukhtolovo; from Shakhunya to Vetluga and Sharanga; from Uren to Krasnye Baki and Sharanga; from Kovernino to Semenov and Gorodets; from Semenov to Voskresenskoye; from Gorodets to Sokolskoye; from Navashino to Voznesenskoye and Pavlovo; from Sergach to Lukoyanov and Vorotinets; from Lukoyanov to Bolshoe Boldino.
Local bus routes connect Nizhny Novgorod with nearby cities. You can go to Balakhna and Zavolzhye from bus station “Kanavinskaya”; to Bor from sales office of Moskovsky railway station; to Kstovo - from bus station “Sennaya” also from sales office "Sherbinki", Sakharov’s prospect and from the airport; to Vorsma - from the bus station; to Bogorodtsk - from the bus station and metro "Park Culture"; to Dzerzhinsk - from bus station “Kanavinskaya”, metro "Avtozavodskaya" and airport.
Along cruise tourist ships across the Volga River there is also river connection across nearby regions operated by ships with underwater wings-motors. Up the Volga River they sail to Gorodets and Urievits (Ivanovsky region); down the river - to Oktyabrskoye, Rabotki, Tatinets, Yurkin, Velikovskoye, Vasilsursk and to Yurin and Kozmodemiansk (republic Mari Al).
Also citizens of Nizhny Novgorod and Dzerzhinsk use local riverboats to get to Bor. River routes also operate to holiday zones from Kanavino (Lenin square) to Mochalny Island, Mesherskoye Lake, Sormovo, and Driazga. Dzerzhinsky river port operates regular cruises along the Oka River to Olenino, Dudenevo, Dudin Monastery and Gorbatov.
